The Providence Friars fell to the Xavier Musketeers 75-68 in a battle between two Big East heavy weights. The Dunkin’ Donuts Center was filled to capacity with a crowd of 12,804 attending. The win improves Xavier’s record to 18-2 and drops the Friars to 17-4.
The story of the game was Xavier’s superior depth and shooting efficiency. Five players on Xavier scored in double figures, led by Jalen Reynolds and Trevon Bluiett, who each scored 15 points. Providence on the other hand only had two double digit scorers, led by Ben Bentil’s 25 points.
In terms of shooting, Xavier shot 30/59 (50.8%) from the field and 7/21 (33%) from behind the arc. In comparison, Providence shot 22/70 (31.4%) from the field and 7/34 (20.6%) from three.
Providence did have some bright spots in the game. Kris Dunn finished with 16 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, and 7 steals, becoming the first player to do so this season. Ben Bentil scored 25 points to round up his season average to 20 points per game.
