Ortiz Gets Paid

The Boston Red Sox have reached an agreement with David Ortiz that all but assures the iconic slugger will finish his career in a Boston uniform, and eliminates what had become an annual rite of spring — Ortiz looking to add more years to his contract. According to multiple sources, Ortiz agreed to a $16 million extension for the 2015 season, a $1 million bump from the $15 million he will be paid in 2014. Also in place is a club/vesting option for the 2016 season that will automatically kick in if Ortiz achieves a certain number of plate appearances, and a club option for 2017. If the option years are fulfilled, Ortiz will remain under Red Sox control into his 40s — he turns 42 on Nov. 18, 2017, the final year of the deal.

Great day to be a Red Sox fan. Every off season it seems there is talk about Ortiz leaving the Sox. Not that he doesn’t want to be here. He loves the city, the people, the environment, and everything else involved being apart of Red Sox nation. But when you win your team 3 championships, have multiple seasons of 30+ homers, .300+ batting average, and 100+ RBI’s, have one of the highest budgets in the MLB and aren’t getting paid what you deserve, you’d be pissed too. A lot of people gave him shit for complaining about not making enough money. Fuck em. Ortiz is the Sox’s franchise player and he deserves to be paid like it. He puts up numbers that people making double his salary put up. Without his grand slam in game 2 of the ALCS last season, the Sox may have never won the World Series and I’d still be crying about it. Teams live for having players like Ortiz. He puts on a show. The most clutch player in franchise history. Hes a big reason fans are paying hundreds of dollars for tickets and merchandise. The face of your organization. After all he’s done for us, it just feels right that he will end his career here. After all, this is our (but really his) fuckin city.
