If you haven’t heard, Salve Regina University has signed a new contract with the city of Newport to build a new state of the art facility in the place of the existing Toppa Field.
You might be thinking to yourself, “hmm, didn’t Salve just do this with another high school on Aquidneck Island?”… you would be correct. Just a few years back, in 2009, SRU signed a 40-year lease with Middletown to build, maintain and use Gaudet Field. Apparently, Gaudet Field was just a bit too far for Salve students – I don’t blame them! If I’m going to college in a small city like Newport, the last thing I want to do is to have to drive an extra few miles to watch Coach Cooney and the SRU Men’s Lacrosse squad get some gb’s and rip some cheddar.
Enough is enough! That’s why Salve dove into their pockets and found an extra 3 million to upgrade Toppa Field and the surrounding Freebody Park. Not only will there be a new turf field come September, but the stands, locker rooms, restrooms and locker rooms will all receive a facelift. Salve will start to share Toppa Field with Rogers High School and continue to share Gaudet Field with Middletown public schools.
